Calcium is essential for healthy teeth and bones and regulating the function of the heart, muscles and nerves. Calcium is especially important for building healthy bones in childhood, maintaining bone strength in adolescence and adulthood, and preventing low bone density and osteoporosis later in life.

Australians receive most of their calcium from dairy foods. About two thirds of our calcium intake comes from dairy products, with the rest coming from smaller amounts that are found in breads, cereals, fruits and vegetables, and calcium fortified products. Tinned salmon and sardines are another good source of calcium.
